Two become One
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Genesis 2:24 KJV
After God created humans, the Scriptures reference a certain paradox. I use this term because it is proposition that when you investigate it thoroughly a truth becoming visible. This paradox is that two – male and female - become one for the unity of purpose on Earth. This unity of purpose applies to the Scriptures that a man must leave his father and mother to cleave to his wife. This Scripture is repeated several times in the Bible for necessity. However, has this unity of purpose changed during this modern age of social change and advanced technology? Has the unity of purpose become irrelevant for today?
Remember, on the final day of creation (Day Six), God issued assignments to the man and woman.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Genesis 1:27-28 KJV
From this assignment, man and woman has a unity of purpose which entails a very simple assignment of replenishing, subduing, and ruling the Earth. Nevertheless, in this advanced technological society, individuals tend to question their purpose even to the point of questioning their gender identity. Because of their gender uncertainty some undergo a process of gender change. Yet, after the gender changes the desire to replenish, subdue, and rule remains intact.
Recently, I witnessed a gender transformation of an acquaintance who medically transformed from a male to female via hormones injection. As a result, the person's bodily appearance changed from that of a male’s appearance to that of a female. After the process, she (he) stated, “I still want to have children and parent them.” Her statement alone reveals the fact that the assignment of replenish, subdue, and rule remains within the psychic even if the natural means of reproduction seem impractical. Apparently, the family structure as dictated by the male leaving his mother and father and cleaving to the wife may become a tradition of the past for gender-specific couples. Yet, it is a possibility that same-sex couples could undermine the family structure and create a void because it deviates from the foundational intention outlined from the beginning.
Therefore, I will argue that only a man and woman can fulfill the unity of purpose on Earth as God intended despite the different innovation of reproducing offspring. Why? Their unique physical structure complements each other. This complementary nature of their genders creates an unbreakable bond until death. This bond is further strengthened by emotional and spiritual connections within the two different genders and serves as their link to God. Such a linkage enables the man and women to become one as this oneness fulfill the original assignment of replenishment leading to extending control (subduing) and ruling this earthy environment. Without the replenishment of humans, the environment will return to its chaotic conditions prior to creation when the Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. Genesis 1:2 (Message) So, my plea is that all should consider the value of unity of purpose and seek to preserve life on Earth as God intended.
