Why Blood

What is so significant about blood from God’s perspective? Even though blood that lingers outside the human body becomes difficult to remove if spilled on clothing, walls, and floors. Yet, blood is vital in the Scriptures and life in general.

Blood is Essential.

Despite being essential for life, blood has a wide range of functions in the human body. Blood is a specialized, fluid connective tissue consisting of 80% water and 20% solids. Blood carries oxygen from the lungs to every cell in the body. Because of oxygen, human cells carry out the metabolic processes necessary for life. Likewise, in the Old Testament, God informed ancient Israel through His servant Moses that blood was necessary for atonement. For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul (Leviticus 17:11). Therefore, blood served as a means of penitence to redeem humans from sin.

 Blood is a Medium.

Blood also serves as a medium for removing waste products from the human body. For example, blood transports waste products to the kidneys and liver, filtering and eliminating them from the body. According to Scripture, the blood is how we are justified and spared from God's wrath. Much more than being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (Romans 5:9)

 Blood is a Defense.

The human immune system relies on blood to defend the body against infections. White blood cells, present in the blood, help identify and neutralize foreign pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These cells act as the body's first line of defense, patrolling the bloodstream and tissues to eradicate harmful invaders. Likewise, blood in the Scriptures protected Israel when the death angel killed all the firstborns of humans and animals in Egypt. As recorded in Exodus 12:7,12-13. 7 Then, they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 12“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

Conclusion

The importance of blood in sustaining life cannot be overstated. Blood transports oxygen, removes waste products, and defends against infections. Blood is vital for the proper functioning of our human internal systems. Understanding the intricate role of blood in maintaining life is crucial. In the same manner, God, who is infinitely wise, used Jesus' death by shedding blood to restore and maintain life as He intended from the beginning of time. Thus, the importance of blood in both the natural and the spiritual realms is undeniable.
